I know my computer either has a virus or a adware program messing it up. I downloaded Kazaa last week (bad idea). For a couple of days, my internet has been slow loading and small popups have occured. Then perfectnav started taking over my browser.

When I try to run ANY form of virus detection my XP shuts down and reboots. I can't get my computer to run Norton without restarting. Same thing with Housecall online virus check.

I downloaded Bazooka and found I had several ad programs. Cydoor, Perfectnav and Gain were shown. I followed the instructions manually and got rid of everything except the Gain. I even did everything suggested by several non-gain websites. As far as that is concerned it should be gone but Bazooka says it isn't. Then I downloaded Spybot and Adaware...again both shut down the computer just after they get searching my c drive. I must admit this is a feature of XP that I hate with a passion. I've never had another version of windows be so touchy.

I also loaded Hijack this and actually got a log (will provide if requested)...but am clueless what to do. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

...then you're on your own, same for Kazaa Lite:

if you have it, get rid of it, don't go there again, for safe file sharing, try this:

Get rid of Kazaa, and post a Hijack log

Reply:

Get SpywareBlaster 3.2
Get Spybot Search & Destroy
Get Google or Yahoo toolbar to block popups
Run a free firewall that works such as Sygate
Get the free AVG antivirus if you dont already have one.

Then..
Move whatever you want to keep and reinstall Windows with a fresh install (not an upgrade). As soon as your hard disk is formatted with your XP-CD, power off and on to enter the bios. Set bios to factory default to be sure its bug free, then continue installing XP.
