Comment:

My brand new PC has been rendered useless.
I had just built this PC - new MB, RAM ,CPU ,HD etc and installed windows XP onto it. Everything was working fine until i copied an executable off my other PC through a CD.
Previously my other PC was experiening wierd problems like not booting up- no memory test, nothing! But this was solved by reseting 4-5 times. So i just assumed it was some power fault or loose wiring.

But then as soon as the executable was copied to my new PC the same thing started to happen, which is when i suspected a virus. Scans of both PCs with Norton, McAfee, Panda and f-prot showed no virus infections.
Then i was using the new PC and all of sudden it reseted and totally died- turn on but all there were was beeps- which according the MB manual meant DRAM error. I tested the DRAM on another comp and it was fine.

Now my other PC is acting very unstable and POST methods in web pages are being converted to GET methods showing passwords etc.. Anti virus software is acting funny- like not downloading all the updates, and still not finding anything!

Has anyone every heard of this type of virus- it cant be win32/CIH or it would have been detected!

What can i do???

Any help apreciated!

what was the name of the executable? If that was a flash utilitie from a different MB you could have killed your new MB.

since this is a new build i'd start over. fdisk and reinstall. If the MB is bad it won't even POST.

you could also reset your bios, to defaults.
if you can enter bios/setup or using the jumper
on the motherboard.

It wasnt a flash util..and it wont even POST.
All i get is black screen and beeps.I tried to reset bios already-no luck. I think i need to buy new MB.

Anyone have any idea what the virus could be so that i can save my other PC??

Thanks for the help

I don't understand the statement. but I have doubts about a virus causing the computer to fail the POST. please describe the beeps it does make.

how about a verbose hardware description of the new computer?

problems with the other computer could be coincidental.

Ok, i got a gigabyte MB model 7N400L1
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
512MB RAM
geForcefx5600
Western Digital 80GB HD

The beeps which are coming from it are continuous long beeps.

when i mean POST methods are changed to GET methods i'm talking about web page scripts.
I dont think the problems are coincidental because its showin the exact same symptoms-
plus Ive noticed wierd activties on it, like executable file sizes changing by small amounts and programs taking ages too run- no responses things like that

You may have multiple problems but you need to stabolize the hardware first.

if you can get it to boot, run Memtest86

what type and number of RAM are you using?

i notice your manual says it supports DDR 400,333,266 unbuffered, 2.5V DDR DIMM only

Have you tried scanning with AdAware
SpyBot?

See my post about recovering from virus posted today. Am new to forum but urs sounds like my problem. In an effort to fix the problem I had to remove the cmos/bios battery
to make sure I could go around any booting virus which seemed to be able to redir my commands(while reinstalling the os). all my scans would come up and say everything was fine even when they clearly weren't. Some one else w/ more time fixing probs may be better to ask but i will keep looking for the same answers.
Ben

Well i cant get it to boot at all- i've read something bout boot-block recovery but cant seem to do this..

I've checked every other component on a friends machine with the same MB(same version, model, bios etc)- and every component seems to work fine.

Even removing the battery to reset the CMOS
does not seem to help!

The only thing left is to RMA the MB back.
