A friend of mine is having major problems with his comp. He had no antivirus or firewall and was unable to boot the computer. It would just get to the desktop wallpaper and freeze with cpu usage at 100%. I finally got to the point where i could get it booted(i used safe mode to clean up alot of spyware and created another account to do all of this) When i installed an antivirus software(avg free edition) i found NUMEROUS virus and trojan alerts. Avg is unable to clean these. I also used trojan hunter and it too was unable to get rid of the problem. I want to get the pc running well again without a format on the hard drive if possible. He has no xp install disk but the rescue disk is on a separate partition on the hdd.

I don't think he has any real valuble data so it might be time to just reformat and start over. I will follow your advise. Also how do I access the rescue disk on the partition? It is a hewlett packard pavillion 510x. Thank you.

Follow the advice at this link http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/16318.html then post your HT log.

I will try to help. I must make a trip to walmart so I will be gone for at least 2 hrs maybe 3. So if you find help elsewhere let me know as the fixes are time consuming.

"I don't think he has any real valuble data..." may just sum it up. Figure that re-formatting and re-installing is going to take 2-3 hours. If flushing the malware takes that long or longer have you really done yourself a favor?

If you decide to press forward, pick up a copy of Ad-Aware and Spybot and run those: They usually do a better job at detecting and removing spyware and trojans than a basic AVS. Make sure you're using the latest updates and remember that viruses and trojans sometimes leave harmless traces of themselves that still trigger alarms. Install a firewall, AVS, and spyware detector and once you can reboot a few times w/o getting warnings you're probably done.
