So just all of the sudden Add/Remove Items list won't populate, System Restore doesn't open and there's no error, task manager tells me System Idle Process takes 99% cpu and its the only thing with a user name(being SYSTEM). Last but not least the computer wont shut down or restart and if i force restart it I cant get it to bring up the safemode boot menu.

I have avast anti-virus and it updated just the other day. I managed to restart in safemode and do a restore. Now when it boots it only shows the background, no icons or start bar. I started firefox thru the task manager. I never had these problems until I got anti-virus...seems like a good way to make money. Create a problem so people pay to have it fixed.
