Hi, need a little help. Picked up an annoying infection from the internet. On startup a single click on any web browser shortcut will keep opening up an infinite # of browser windows, (had 134 IE before I was able to stop it). After shutting down the browsers thru task manager the problem will go away and everything is normal until the next reboot. I found the problem originates with "alg.exe". I found that, on startup, if I go and shutdown alg.exe (thru taskmanager) before doing anythng else, everything is normal. Problem is I can't detect it through any AV or spyware program ive tried, I also can't delete alg.exe from the "system32" directory, it just keeps reappearing. Any suggetions?

Thanks,

Application Layer Gateway service is a component of Windows OS. It is required if you use a 3rd party firewall or Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. Do not end this program in task manager - you will lose all internet connectivity until next restart or login.

Note: The alg.exe file is located in the C:\Windows\System32 folder. In other cases, alg.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm

Thanks for the reply but I AM AN IDIOT! It turned out not to be a trojan that had compromised alg.exe but a faulty keyboard. After hours of searching and testing files it turned out to be an unnoticibly stuck <Enter> key on the keypad. For some reason disabling alg.exe prevented all the windows from opening, go figure.
I knew the file was part of windows but I thought, by trial and error, that it had been infected.

I'll go stand in the corner now and beat myself with a flail...
