I recently purchased Spyware Doctor because it was the only way I could "automatically" remove the trojan VIRUSBURST. I normally keep Nortion Internet Security running at all times and have Spybot which I run once in a while. Between those two programs and some maintenence all was well until I got VIRUSBURST after I stupidly clicked on a button that said my RealPlayer need to update codecs or something.

Since loading and using Spyware Doctor, Norton doesn't load at start-up, and I assume it is not running at all, anywhere. My question is this. Will Norton and Spyware Doctor conflict and should I keep Spybot? It seems to me that I've seen websites that recommend against having multiple spyware programs running concurrently. I like Norton, but it is Spyware Doctor that actually helped me out here, as Norton didn't even detect this virus/trojan thingy after it initially deleted something when I first contracted it.

If you had a popup that told you this virus has been detected on your computer, and the only way to remove it is to purchase the software, you've been had. It's a scam to get you to buy their software. That's probably why Norton didn't detect it, because it didn't exist. You can run multiple spyware apps and virus checkers if you wish. They do cause a conflict amongst themselves, depending on the applications. I personally use AVG antivirus (uses very few system resources) / Spyware S&D / AdAware 6.0 and have no problems. Hope this helps. Good luck.....

grasshopper. Thank you for your reply, I should have been more specific. The virus did exactly as you say, but I did not buy the software it tried to trick me into. I did some research and came to the conclusion that the Spyware Doctor was my best option to get rid if it. It has lots of bells and whistles, seems to work well and I am now wondering if the Norton Internet Security has become extraneous.

If it's not letting Norton load then it means that you don't have an antivirus - not a good idea!! - spyware isn't the same thing. If Spyware Doctor is a legitimate program you should be able to ask them if they do have a problem with integrating with Norton.......

Spyware Doctor also gave me false positives as a way to purchase their product, but I didn't fall for it, as other free progs do the same cleanup and like johnr said, you need a good AV running.

I know you probably paid good $'s for the Norton prescription, but IMHO, I would maybe uninstall Norton and maybe try Avast or AVG as they don't use as many resources as Norton and if you need a good firewall, Comodo is the best bet I know and it's also free.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

A couple of ideas here...
RE:Norton...Dump it for AntiVir which is free and a much more effective a/v.Comodo is a great freeware firewall.

RE: antispyware. As far as I know Spyware Doctor is legit.I've ran it and it does give false positives.Instead of Spybot and AdAware I would use SUPERAntispyware free scanner and Ewido as backup on-demand scanners.Just don't have more than of the same type of program running resident(monitor).
