Hi

I'm not sure where to post this so I will do it here. This is kinda weird...
When I checked ad-aware for updates...have the latest...in the window there is a "read more" link. When I click on that I get an error with msmsgs.exe...exact error is (in the popup)
Window title= msmsgs.exe NO DISK
window message= There is no disk in the drive insert disk. Then there are 3 buttons:
cancel, retry, continue. (has a red x on it and x to close window)
The page continues to load in the background very slowly, I cancel out of that error...page continues to load...and error comes up again...same one...cancel out of that one too and page finally loads up normally.
Does anyone know why windows messanger wants a disk in A: when clicking on any links within ad-aware?
I also get a: drive access when running my outlook email prog but no errors.
Apparently virus/trojan/spyware free.
I have no weird outgoing requests from firewall.

That's a strange one indeed, you prob already done this but....
Try uninstall/reinstall adaware and messenger.
There is always the restore option.
You didn't by chance use your floppy to transfer files using your IM,could be the result of an incomplete file transfer... didn't think so.
Does messenger function properly otherwise?
The Adaware disk request is a braintwister.

Curious as always
Eye on this one

Actually no...I didn't try uninstalling either prog yet..will try tomorrow..I'm off to work soon.
It is windows messanger not MSN and I am unsure of the removal of messanger instructions...so I will try remove ad-aware first before messanger.
You are right...I havn't done any file transfers with floppy's on messanger.
Messanger does work fine.
I really dont think restore would do the trick because it has happened once before but I thought nothing of it..It does not happen with my other computer.
I will let you know what I find out.
Thanks.

Tried removing ad-aware, reboot, reinstall ad-aware, install the updates etc...problem still comes up with the error box as above.
Now when I access control panel via start> settings> control panel....same error!..hit cancel..control panel loads normally..hit retry...get error again...hit continue...control panel loads normally.
Again...apparently clean of any malware...?

Is the error message still:
"Window title= msmsgs.exe NO DISK" ?

Have you tried shutting down the messenger program @ startup thu the services app?
Give it a try and see if the errors still occur. If not the message program might have gone buggy, and an uninstall/reinstall might be in order.

What driver they talking about...?

I am running with full admin privs...
What prog are they saying to reinstall? Messanger?
Would running sfc /scannow work?
If they are talking about the driver for floppy...in dev. manager all is well..driver located where it should..C:\windows\system32\drivers\flpydisk.sys
The file properties etc for msmsgs.exe and all the other files in messanger folder in program files...are the same as the ones on my other computer...the dates are ok too

If I sign out of messanger> exit> end task on msmsgs.exe, then I can access comntrol panel thru start> settings> control panel without error.
I also do not get error when accessing link in ad-aware panel.
May look like I need instructions on removing, reinstalling messanger...unless I try sfc /scannow.

System File Check probably wouldn't hurt.
Do you have a full XP Pro official disk, in case it asks for it?

Have never done a reinstall of messenger, but never having done something has never stopped me so far. Adventure.

What version do you have? Can always Google it into submission.

What version of messanger?
Version 4.7.0.2009...its the one that comes with xp...then had to get the update for messanger to work...remember a while back the flurry of posts relating to security update on messanger?
Yes I have the xp pro cd.
Where would i look to find any log file if any file had to be repaired?...sorry for carrying on with all these questions....i have run sfc /scannow b4 on other computers and this one but would like something i can look at that will tell me what if anything was damaged.
Thanks!

not sure about the log thing other than to search *.log at the search for files and folders app.

Messenger removal stuff:

Also go to start>run>eventvwr, see if you pickup any good info

Shep

It was event viewer I used to gather info in response #5...
I tried sfc...then rebooted...then I deleted all my temp files in c:\windows\temp
Seems to have fixed the problem....all is working ok but I sure don't like what I found in temp files....all kinds of HACKING tools and folders...???..that is one thing I won't play with...so now I have more investigation to do....*sigh* now I can look for more problems...at least the initial problem is fixed.
Thanks for the interest and help...I'll look into those links.
I tried searching for *.log...couldn't find anything there that showed sfc results...many log files I couldn't open bc they were "in use"
