MSHTA process not unloading

Specs: Windows XP
In my process list (via ctrl/alt/del) I have noticed a build up of the process MSHTA.EXE, there are at least 15-20 of them at times. I cannot fathom out why. As I understand it, its something used to run HTA files at the request of IE, but shouldn't they unload themselves and not use valuable memory. In addition to this AVG keeps telling me (well every couple of hours or so) about some Threat, but it does nothing (or seems to do nothing) to rid me of it. I've run Malware and AVG scans but this strange thing does not go away. I have searched high and low on the web and found nothing similar. Please can anyone help or suggest a way to find out more about what this might be? Many thanks.

Google that process. There are lots of hits.
