I'm trying to access the StartUp page to disable unwanted programs, but it disappears after about 2 seconds. It does it on the System Configuration Utility and also if I am quick enough to click StartUp.

Is this some kind of bug to prevent me from disabling the bug?

It is most likely a virus.

Go to the following link and download the shell open command reset tool and run it http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-050614-0532-99

Please post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the virus/spyware/hijacker can be identified.

Please download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Thanks for the info but guess what?

I can't run it. I was able to do some of the steps above and loaded the files to the desk top. I was able to open the program but it disappeared in 2 seconds. Quickly clicking to do a system scan resulted in that task starting but again disappearing in 2 sec.

Any suggestions???

Restart the computer in SAFE Mode.

1. Start Command prompt from Start - All Programs - Accessories.
2. Type the following commands:

cd\windows (then press enter)
copy regedit.exe regedit.com (then press enter)(note space after copy and after exe )

start regedit.com (then press enter)(note space after start)

3. Now, navigate to and select the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

4. Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane.
5. Delete current value data, and then type: "%1" %*
6. ok

If all went well you should then be able to run the .exe files.

Thanks for the info. That makes sense to start it in safe mode. All this may be getting over my head though. It is my mother-in-law's computer that I'm trying to fix. If I can't fix it she'll take it in to get fixed. Her teen-age daughter has been down loading a lot of junk.

Thanks again Jabuck. will keep you updated if I make the attempt to fix.
