Hi,
Just yesterday I found out that whenever I try to open msconfig or regedit the windows just pops up stays there for a couple of seconds and then disappears. I did to check for viruses/spywares using Norton Antivirus, Ad Aware and even tried Housecall. All them did not report any viruses. Even tried someone's suggestion about creating a new user and assigning admin rights to that user. Nothing worked. However I am able to open both msconfig and regedit in safe mode.

I really do not want to reinstall the whole OS so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Akshay.

Checked my background processes saw rpc.exe running. Once I killed the process both msconfig and regedit worked fine. However I am still not sure how to get rid of the virus. Also one of the processes running had the name mkdakkz.exe . Tried searching for it on google but nothing comes up. The process description says "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services".
Any help on that would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Akshay.

well the first couple things you can do is make it so rpc.exe doesnt open on startup (and do the same for dkdakkz.exe if you know that it is a virus) is open regedit (which is now operable, right?)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>
SOFTWARE>
Microsfot>
Windows>
CurrentVersion>
Run

in run, look on the right pane, these are all the programs that startup when the computer is turned on and logged into your account. you can delete the key that says "rpc.exe" way over on the right side data part and the location is more than likly in the c:\windows\system32\ folder where as you could look for the name (rpc.exe) and find it there.

the regedit and msconfig problems are apparently symptoms of the Spybot worm, but I haven't been able to fix it yet myself.

i had the same problem. I recommend that you update your anti virus settings. I have Norton and it found the MSConfig virus and once i dealt with that everything is back to normal.

I have the same problem on one of my client's machines. This is not a virus. I disagree. It may behave like a virus but I tried a couple of tools and and nothing registers. Also, you should not use norton. It is the worst virus protection out there.

I am having this issue as well but I am not able to open "Task Manager" as well with the same problem as the original post. I have checked my Registry before looking for a solution and there is nothing in the "Run" folder.

I have checked out my services in administrative tools and stopped the RPC Service that is setup for Manual Start. I am still having the issue as well.

I have also did the virus check, SpyBot Eliminator.

Alright. I have figured it out. By depressing CTRL-ALT-DEL multiple times I was able to see what processes were running. What process that was running on my computer was "msconfig35.exe". I was able to go to a command prompt, use the "taskkill" utility to end the process (taskkill /F /IM msconfig35.exe) I was then able to edit my registry and remove that executible from the:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>
SOFTWARE>
Microsoft>
Windows>
CurrentVersion>
Run

Hope this is good information for y'all.
