I turned on the computer this morning after hubby had been browsing last night. I got the dial up connection box for no reason, as soon as Windows loaded. I went online to see what he had done, and Norton immediately picked up 3 viruses, trojans, and deleted them. My home page had been hijacked to Cool Web Search, I believe it was. I ran Adaware, after getting the latest update and it found several new registry entries and values, all having to do with this Cool Web Search. I allowed it to remove the entries. Then when I opened my spyware blaster, and checked for updates, it told me an update was available, but I would have to download the update, it could not be updated with version 3.0. When I clicked on the link to go ahead and download the update it takes me to a search page, instead of the download page. I think I still have some of this trojan on my computer and it is blocking me from downloading the update. I restarted my computer and when Windows loaded this time, I got 2 errors. The first one was:

Windows cananot find C/WINDOWS/System32/services/wmplayer.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button and then click search. It gave me an option to click OK. I did and then I got another error message. This one said:

Could not load or run C/WINDOWS/System32/services/wmplayer.exe specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

PLEASE help me someone. I do NOT want to go into the registry on my brand new Windows XP. I have read it is a lot harder to get into and out of the registry and I am no computer expert at all. Could anyone tell me what to do next, in terms a computer illiterate woman can understand? Are these ligitimate files that Windows is searching for and how can I get rid of them, if not? I am running a virus scan right now to see if Norton picks anything else up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dianna

Hi Dianna

The Cool Web Search hijack is perhaps one of the most insidious around - the removal tool of choice is CoolWeb Shredder.

Plenty of info on that page which may well be applicable to your situation.

I think I have fixed the problem Dianna has because I had the same problem.

1 Run cwshredder.
2 Run ad-aware removeral tool and remove all spyware.
3 Click the start button, then run and type in msconfig. Click the start-up tab and unclick wmplayer.

This should fix the error problems you are receiving as it fixed mine. Also Windows Media Player is working perfect
