Missing files from desktop

May 8, 2012 at 08:41:17
Specs: Windows XP
Hi I have a problem, few days ago when I started my pc (windows xp) my desktop picture was changed, and all the files and folders that were there were missing. I found them in disk C, and transferred onto desktop. I also had to change all the settings for my browser, and reinstall some programs. But the next day when I turned it on, my old desktop was back but now the files that I have transferred onto new one are missing and I cannot locate them. How do I find them??
Thank you.

It sounds like you have a virus.. a bad one.

I would download Spybot - Search and Destroy and have it scan your entire system for threats. And once its found everything, you should be good to go from there.

This program will scan your entire system and remove the threats, but it won't fix the result of the problem. To do that, go into Windows Explorer (right click the start button). Navigate to your profile folders (My Documents, Favorites, etc).. all of these folders are most likely dimmed. Right click on each one and scroll down to properties and make sure they are unhidden.. do this for all of them that are there.

Afterwards, restart your computer and you should be fine.

If you have any issues, just come back and let us know!

Hi, thank you for your help, but I have downloaded spybot, and when I do check, it just stops at certain number of checked files(always the same) and then does nothing. He traces some files that are corrupted but I cannot do anything with them . Also I have made all the folders in explorer visible but I still cannot locate my missing files.. I have also done the search of all computer but still nothing..

Then the virus is still on your system.. the fact that you made the folders visible and its still not working tells me this.

Reboot the computer into safe mode and run Spybot again and see what happens.
