From Task Manager, try Running explorer That might get your desktop up, but it won't fix the problem.

Thanks Razor2.3, good idea! Never even thought of that.

I also wanted to add that the same issue ocurs while in safe mode. All four corners have safe mode in corner but blank screen otherwise.

Sorry rtang626 you can only use ctrl alt delete. to bring up tskmgr.

You can't right click or use any other functions as nothing at all happens.

In the tskmgr there seems to be nothnig running wierd or sucking up CPU memory.

Any suggestions, anyone

UPDATE: This is what I've found so far. There is a critical system procsess running in tskmgr (therefore I cannot end process) called CRSS.exe and SMSS.exe

Both are running along with a handfull of other programs that seem legit according to a search of each one.

According to my search either one of these can be a virus/worm/trojan. As stated earlier I cannot get to the desktop at all and the only thing that works in either safe mode or regular is tskmgr entered by using ctrl alt delete.

Please help!

Well, there's CSRSS.EXE, but WinXP doesn't have a CRSS.EXE, so I'd start there. If you want to make sure, open Internet Explorer (Run command: iexplore), or any browser, and grab Sysinternal's AutoRuns. Extract the autorunsc.exe, perferably to your C:\. Then, open cmd, and type:
C:\autorunsc -mav | find /i "crss.exe"
If you get any output from the command, then that's the virus.

Only problem with that is it's not letting me access anything. When booting everything shows up right up until the desktop and then its only the background and nothing else.

Maybe I can dl that to a disk and run it via tskmgr and then boot up to cmd?

Hi, I'm posting this HijackThis logfile to see if any advanced users can help me. If you read the above please be aware that this is all being done from the taskmgr. I tried to delete the CRSS.exe fole from system32 but couldn't. It apparently has hijacked my startup and will not allow access to desktop.

I also ran Microsofts maliciuos software tool and it found noting. Who the heck knows what mom does on her computer...

I was able to save moms personal "my doc" file, outlook and IE settings. I went ahead and did a fresh install of XP.

It's been a lot of trouble ever since I upgraded a year ago so I figured this would be better.

Thanks for all the suggestions
