The fingerprint reader I purchased from Microsoft works only on Internet Explorer, but I use Firefox. Is there any patch available to enable me to use it on Firefox?

While i can't say for certain, judging by past Microsoft practises i would say no.Just like you cannot remove IE without hosing windows.I like XP very much but wish IE was 100% off my system. But again, Microsoft did not give me that choice.

But there is no need to "uninstal" IE - FF & IT coexist very well on my PC (I use both simultaneously)

Yes, i understand that XpUser, but we are not given a choice and are forced to have it remain on our systems whether we like it or not.I am quite sure Windows could function very well without IE being integrated the way it is.Don't you think. So why was it designed this way?.Like i said, i think XP is great and it's been a very stable OS for me but i don't enjoy having things forced upon me and since i cannot rid my machine of it, it is forced on me.That's all.

No one's forcing you to use Windows - that was a choice

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true
