Reply: Most anti spyware programs do not run in real time - you have to keep them updated and then run them manually. Spywareblaster (from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html ) will do so and attempt to keep much spyware from installing - but you must keep this program also up to date. It is best to run the programs from Safe Mode and with System Restore turned off (turn System Restore back on after the scans are complete). It is not necessary to turn off anti spyware prgrams when you uninstall other programs.

Reply: M$ antispyware does run in 'real-time' - if you install a program which makes a registry/core change then M$ will advise you & let you block it. In this respect if a program installation recommends you turn of antivirus then I'd say you have to consider doing the same for M$. Having said that I would only turn off AV etc. if you're absolutely certain of the software source - anything new or slightly dubious I'd let your protection systems stay running & doing their job. Reply: It may be useful, sometimes, to turn anti virus programs off whilst you install new programs but I have never turned off spy/mal/adware programs!
