Comment:

My computer is currently running on very old McAfee virus software...version 5.0. When trying to upgrade to the newest version, I encounter problems.

In the process of trying to upgrade, the software asks that the previous version of McAfee be removed.

So, I head over to the add/remove programs, click on remove...and it says,"Installation for 9x only" and refuses to uninstall.

So I am currently stuck with perfectly good new software that I can't install!!

Please help,
Mel

If your AV won't uninstall from add/remove progs, then try this. select/click Folders from My Documents (or Pictures etc.) Click the + My Computer, + Local Disk, look for Program Files and click it. Search for McAfee folder, open it and see if has an uninstall in the AV folder, if not deleate the whole folder and reboot then install your new Mcafee.

I also found this if it helps:http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/161773.html

I recommend you also get RegCrawler, they have a 30 day free trial (check Google). Just type McAfee into its search block and it will bring up every registry key pertaining to that software for deletion. I've been using this after every uninstall for several years and it does a great job. Have never had a problem.

Have a look on the McAfee forums at forums.mcafeehelp.com. There are several posts which deal with this matter. Just do a search and they should pop up.
