Have you tried a free antivirus program? Something like AVG or Avast! (which I use).

Search for them or try a site like versiondownload.com

Answer: AV doesn't detect malwares and other non-virus signatures.

Question: which is lighter on my system?

Answer: Neither. Both are resource hogs.

Ive never tried mcafee but norton Internet security is pretty good, comes with a firewall too
