Can anybody help me detect a master boot virus?
My OS is WindowsME, today my PC only can boot from HDD (existed some virus), but CAN NOT boot from FDD or CR-ROM. FDD is still OK.
After boot from HDD, Windows runs, I can use FDD, but I can't see CR-ROM.
If I open Control Panel/System -> Device Manager I see the yellow exclamation mark on "Hard disk Controler".
IF I remove HDD, I can boot from FDD. And if I assambly HDD, my PC only can detect HDD, after that FDD run a little and stop. Monitor is black, only cussor.
I have scan by Norton2002 but it's not OK.
What must I do?
I am waiting for any your advise.
My e-mail address is LisetteDV@hotmail.com
Thank you,
Best Regards,
Lisette de Valmy

If you can acces your cd and floppy from in windows but it wont boot from either the odds are you have to enter Your system BIOS and check to see that your system is set to look for those drives in the boot devide order and also check to make sure that your seek floppy at boot up is enabled too. I allways turn off my seek other drives at boot to stop some one from accidently leaving a floppy in my drive at boot up

hello
if your sure its an mbr problem than use start up boot disk and do fdisk/mbr
take out floppy and reboot.
windows will rewrite mbr.make sure this is your problem first.if its something else and it dont let windows rewrite this its reinstall time. becarefull

I had one of those too.
The virus was called NYB and originated
in 1995. It infects the master boot record
and not only does it decrease the
performance of your computer, it won't let
you see your CD-ROM or detect it at all.The best solution for that is
low-formatting the drive. I never tried
FDISK /mbr switch. Does that actually
work???

hello
As i can get from ur mail it seems that there can be two three reasons for ur problem
1> your BIOS settings is not correct.please check if the computer looks on the floppy drive first for the boot record before it goes to the hdd.i mean that the booting order should be
FIRST BOOT DEVICE FDD
SECOND BOOT DEVICE CDROM
THIRD BOOT DEVICE HDD2>if ur getting any boot record virus on scanning u need to remove it using any antivireus progream ,if that does not work the best way is to format and re install but that should be the very last step because u will lose any information present in thr drive that u format(BUT READING UR MAIL I DONOT THINK THIS IS CAUSED BY A BOOT SECTOR VIRUS)
3>u might be heaving some problem with the cdrom drivers try reinstalling the drivers for the cd rom and if recured install the drivers for the HDD(if recured)well if it still doesnot work mail me back and give the details
at cdc200024@yahoo.com
bye
