Many startup entries missing

March 11, 2010 at 17:38:23
Specs: Windows XP, P4 1.6 GHz - 512 MB
My Msconfig startup tab is missing a whole bunch of entries that were present prior to the last few days. These files are still loading at startup somehow. They just do not appear in the MSConfig startup tab, and there are no registry keys for them in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run like there used to be. I have no idea how they are still loading at startup, but I'm suspecting something virus related. HijackThis scan is clean IMO. Spybot S & D says clean.

System restore says that it is unable to restore to the restore points from 2-3 days ago.

I used to have 17 entries in my startup tab, now there are only 2 and neither of these are problematic.

Any idea what could cause this?

Try downloading & installing microsoft's Sysinternals - it's a suite of programs but includes a 'super msconfig' for want of a better description called AUTORUNS. You can get it from HERE

OK, I've downloaded that and looked over everything in the Everything tab. Nothing there is jumping out at me as problematic, but most of my entries that were in

are no longer there.

Very strange.

I'm seeing a key I haven't seen before:

It has the following subkeys:

Are these problematic? I've never seen them before and I've done a fair amount of system cleanups.

I've just checked my system and most startup items are under HKEY_CURRENT_USER............... rather than LOCAL MACHINE - there's only one item in that RUN key.

I used to always have several in there. I only have 1 in HKCU.

Very odd.
