I have been having problems with a pop up that wouldn't go away....well, now I have hundreds of them.. I can't even get to a page without at least 10 more windows opening up. I am going to need major help. I have tried several things suggested on here, but nothing is helping. If anything it's getting worse. Please help me. Thank you so much!!

Do you have SP2?
If so, set the pop-up blocker to max and see if you still get pop-ups.

Like what? List what you've done so we can try to help you.

Are all your criticals up to date?
What Anti-virus are you using?

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results as it will help others.

Well, I got hoodwinked I think when I bought this computer from someone else. It is very difficult to go back and forth and look to see what I have done, but I will try, some programs recommended and I have tried are .. ccleaner, spybot search and destroy, adaware, AVG, I think that covers most of it. Don't know about the criticals, and have been trying to get rid of the problems on here and was told should get this stuff cleard off before loading new antivirus. Don't know which one to go buy if I should.... please be easy on me. I know I sound like an idiot...kinda feel like one too!! Hope you can help me. I'm frustrated.

Try this;
Download Avast free http://www.avast.com/eng/download-a...
to your desktop. Turn off AVG and then install Avast and let it do a bootscan on reboot.
Move everything it finds to the chest.
Post back and let us know how you made out.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results as it will help others.

you moved them to the chest like I said?
Are you still getting pop-ups?

To find out if you have SP2 just click on the help button at the top of your browser and click on about internet explorer. It will tell you there what version you have

I'm sorry, I don't know what SP2 is.. I looked at the area you said..it says version 6.0 Is that what you are talking about? I haven't had a pop up yet. It's only been a few minutes though. You think this did the trick?

It should say version 6 SP1 or SP2.

Here, try this:
Click on tools at the top and see if it says pop-up blocker.
If it does, adjust the settings to maximum and see if that blocks the pop-ups

Hi mollyk,

Heya XpUser4Real,

I recommended Avast bootscan in a previous post by molly. We both know how this AV program is.

Have you got a firewall yet?

This will help prevent malware from accessing the internet.

Sorry to hear that you bought this pc infected and we will try to help you get running malware free. But you really need to follow what is advised.

Next time you get a pop-up can you post what it says so we can try and pin-point the problem to combat it.

BTW... The AVG program you are using,... is it AVG antivirus or AVG Anti-Rootkit Free?

Next time you run a scan can you also note down the name of the trojans and let us know what is detected in another post.

Also, I notice that you also have SUPERAntiSpyware installed, I would recommend you update this and run it in safe mode. Quarantine everything it detects.

mollyk, try this free on-line scan:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php
and remove all it finds.
It may stall at first because it is downloading new definitions, but it will run.

Did you get a Reinstallation CD with this computer? If so, you should reload the system. If not, spend the money and buy a legit copy of XP to install.

And you should really turn off the System Restore feature until you get this cleared up or you're going to keep reinfecting yourself.

Some times it's much easier to give ONE resolution at a time untill the poster posts back, saves confusion.

I don't really think that should be necessary at this time, besides, I'm quite sure most Dell PC's come with a seperate XP installation disc. (at least the ones in the past 3 yrs have one)

I agree with XpUser4Real,

Too many posts can become confusing in trying to remedy a problem.

Here's a previous post by mollyk which may help... It has a list of her installed apps.

I appreciate all the input, but it is much easier, especially for me..to not have several different avenues running. There were 2 of you helping me last night, and seemed to be on the same wave length and confirming what each other said... that works for me, and I appreciate it more than you know!! So what's next?? I'm ready when you are!! Thanks.

I was speaking from my experience in which several people I've helped purchased computers that were seriously infected with spyware/virus and were just pretty much worthless as far as functioning OS and programs are concerned.

My recommendation; if either a full version of XP, or just Dell's Reinstallation CD (Green with SP2) are included, then use what's already there. It would save countless hours of tweaking and repairing what's probably already very screwed up.

That's my $.02 and I'll now move on to other issues. :)

I'll get you started but XpUser4Real is helping you with this thread.

Click on the link below to go to this site and run the online x-cleaner scan:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php

look for a yellow bar that will pop-up at the top of the screen and click on it to install the activeX control.

When prompted (you might have to wait a bit) click "install" in the box that pops up. Your scan will now start.

When any alerts come up click on the "remove it" button for each one until the scan has finished.

P.S. keep en eye out for any firewall alerts that want you to allow x-cleaner to access the internet. Click allow if they do.

I have run it and it showed Downloader A and registry keys
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE SYSTEM
HKEY CURRENT USER\SOFTWARE SYSTEM

Now when I am typing very often, my cursor just freezes, and I have to stop and click back where I was typing to continue. It also switches to all caps on a regular basis and keeps trying to download microsoft word. Does this give you any leads?? I hope so!!

I have done that. I still have it off. I ran spybot search and destroy and it showed win32.vb.ahq and Fastclick. It removed everything except one entry from the win32 trojan it said. I let it run again on restart.
