Malware which replaces Windows XP

May 28, 2011 at 15:16:06
Specs: Macintosh
My laptop has a virus which has also infected an external hardrive connected to the laptop at the time. It looks like malware. It's basically taken over the Windows operating system, replacing the desktop image with some strange graffiti (including a picture of that rather racist "Ahmet the terrorist" skull-cartoon), a black background, all the windows colours are grey/black, the format looks like Windows 2000 instead of Windows XP (which it is meant to be), the desktop icons have mostly gone to leave the very basics the labels for which have been replaced with titles such as "GO AWAY" for Explorer, "WC" for the recycle-bin. While I appreciate that a bored, acne-faced 16-year-old in some faceless midwestern town with perhaps too much time for his right hand thinks this is funny, it's actually ruining my work and, more worryingly, may have ruined a hardrive containing a lot of data that is very important to me. I tried using a Kaspersky recovery disk and it did nothing. I'm now reluctant to switch my laptop on again. Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

Your System Specs reflect the OS as Macintosh.

However, you are describing what you call an XP problem.

Please explain further.

Yes apologies, I'll explain. I am using a Mac at the moment because I cannot use my PC. The virus I describe is definitely affecting my PC, which is switched off and not in use because of the malware/virus. It is a Dell laptop, about six years old. Thanks.
