Subject: Malware opening IE windowsOS: WIN XP SP2CPU/Ram: 1.3 Ghz centrino |
Comment: Hello, I have a problem with my PC. As soon as my PC is connected to internet it opens some internet explorer windows with pubs. I have zone alarm installed. I tried my up-to-date norton anti virus, Lavasoft-Adware, SpyBoot but nothing changed. REM : I have a tomcat and FTP server on my PC for my personnal website and I don't know if these can be affected. I also have some strange executables in task manager and I cannot kill them. I don't know if it's the same problem but when I check tcp connections using TCPView I can see that svchost.exe is trying to open connectsions in permanence. I really don't know what to do to solve my problem. Thank in advance if somebody can help me. I can provide any logs/reports you will need, just let me know. Regards, Alain

Reply: philipina, try this, run this free online scan from Panda When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to the desktop, then copy/paste into the text editor and post it. Then download ccleaner to clean out all your temp files but wait and run it after running ewido and while you are still in safe mode. Make sure there is not anything in the recycle bin that you need as ccleaner will delete recycle bin items unless checked not to do so. Download Ewido Security Suite then set it up this way Ewido Setup Instructions reboot into Safe Mode and run Ewido When the scan has completed, Ewido will create a report.txt file. Click the "Save Report" button on the bottom of the screen and save the log to your desktop in case you need it later. Please reboot into normal mode and post the ewido log. Then download Hijack This at this link http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ then place it into a folder of it's on, such as C:\HJT, so that back up copies can be made and not clutter your desktop or other folders and the backup copies of deleted items can be easily located if needed. Once saved double click HijackThis.exe, and press "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents into the text editor at this forum. Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Reply: philipina, You may have a Look2Me infection. Download theis removal tool http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread. IMPORTANT: Do not run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so! if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first. In you HT log you have a program running (C:\Program Files\PwsMail\PwsMail.exe) do you know what this is?

Reply: Hello, It seems that the problem is solved. I did not get any popup for 20 minutes now. Thanks a lot. Just a small question : Is there any "magic" tool to detect/remove spyware. I'm very surprised that my Norton Antivirus cannot do this. Thanks again for your help. Alain.

Reply: Hello, It's me again... :) After rebooting the PC I can confirm that my popup problem is solved but my svchost.exe is still reacting strangely. I have one svchost process trying to open connections in permanence svchost:1228 If I kill it, it is OK but after rebooting it starts again. Any idea? Alain.

Reply: Alain, usually the only time scvhost is a bad guy is when it is located in a folder other than C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost or C:\I386.exe such as C:\Program Files\svchost.exe or C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe. Go to start>my computer>local disk(c:)>WINDOWS>prefetch>double click it>edit>select all>file >delete as to clean out the prefetch folder. Now do a search for svchost.exe and delete all instances except the above mentioned that are in bold. Next make sure the windows firewall is on. Go to control panel>security center>if it is not on click "window firewall" at the bottom of the page and turn it on. Next purge System Restore by shutting it down and restarting it. To create a new restore point go Start>Run>type "msconfig" without the quotes>ok>Launch System Restore>Tick the circle beside "create a restore point">next>name it anything you wish>Create>home>restart the computer. Then run the ewido program if you have not done so yet.
