Subject: Malware infection
OS: Win XP
CPU/Ram: 2.80 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM
Manufacturer/Model: Compaq Presario
Comment:

A few days ago I accidentally downloaded some malicious software. It was identified as a virus by Norton, but it couldn't get rid of it. At first I thought it didn't have any effect on my computer, but then I found out that I can't reach gmail.com anymore. Also, when I open Internet Explorer my homepage is set to sex.com and this can't be changed. It took me a while before I noticed this, because I use Firefox as my standard browser.

I tried scanning my computer with Microsoft's Malware Removal Tool, but it didn't find anything.

Any help would be appreciated!

It sounds as though your browser has been hi-jacked. This means that everytime you open your browser you are redirected to a different site that the hijackers want you to go to. I think a program hi-jacks the browser, so some sort of spyware has probably been downloaded without you knowing. (i.e while a website is loading)

If you can't find the program resposible for affecting your browser you could try and reinstall internet explorer or backup your files and re format your computer.

Please post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the virus/spyware/hijacker can be identified.

Please download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Please download SmitFraudFix from this link http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/Smitfra... Then extract the contents to your desktop.
!!!! Only run option #1 as runing the other options on an uninfected computer will damage the desktop.!!!!
Open the "SmitfraudFix" folder and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Using Hijack This I solved the problem with sex.com being my IE homepage. I can now changed it to anything I want again. However, I still can't reach gmail.com in either IE or Firefox. On other computers behind the same router I am able to reach gmail.

The Hijack This log is:

Temporarily disable any of the following anti-spyware realtime protection programs that you may have Disable Realtime Protection

Then turn off Norton's ScriptBlocking:

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:

Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the "SmitfraudFix" folder again and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing " Y " and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if "wininet.dll " is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing "Y" and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Reboot into safe mode.

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

Run Hijack This from safe mode, close all windows except Hijack This, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SvcManager] svhostz1.exe

Exit hijack this but remain in safe mode.

Set up the computer to view hidden files by going to start>control panel>folder options>view tab>tick the circle beside "show hidden files and folders" and untick the box beside "hide extensions of known file types" and "hide protected system operating files">apply>ok.

Navigate to and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svhostz1.exe

Run ATF-Cleaner from safe mode.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

In Safe Mode, run AVG Anti-spyware and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.

AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

Please download ComboFix to the desktop from this link:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe

Double-click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running, it may cause your system to hang.)

Please post the combofix.txt log.

Your java is out of date and can be exploited. Download the latest version of http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the "Download" button to the right.

Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.

Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the "coffee cup" icon next to it.

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed

. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_6_0-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Post a new Hijack This log please.

I did what you said upto running AVG. At first it started out fine and it found two infected files (trackingcookie.doubleclick and downloader.small.edb), but after a while it got slower and slower until scanning 1 object took about 10 minutes. I then terminated AVG as it would have taken days to scan my computer that way.

Any suggestions?

I have installed the latest Java Runtime Environment. I've also downloaden Combofix, but when I try to run it I get a pop-up saying that it's not a valid Win32 application. I have included the Hijack This log below.

I'll be away for the weekend, so I'll try to run AVG Anti-Spyware in safe mode then. Anyway, thanks a lot, you've been a great help so far. Here's the Hijack This log:

Please download Dr Web CureIt to your desktop from this link ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan.
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives.
A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable.
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log on your desktop.

Jabuck,

I think that the file mentioned by the AVG log (C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Mijn documenten\Install\matlab_sn_version_7_release_keygen.exe) could very well be the source of the infection. I was messing around with that file when the problems started...

Has your problem been resolved since AVG quarantined C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Mijn documenten\Install\matlab_sn_version_7_release_keygen.exe

If so, leave it in quarantine for a few days and if matlab continues to work properly you can delete it.

I have emptied the quarantine folder, but sadly the problem still hasn't been resolved.

Sometimes when I try to reach gmail.com I get a different pop-up saying that "SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length." I don't know if this is of any help to you...

No, that's not it either. I guess it's going to boil down to having to format my machine. But thanks for your help!
