I keep getting the following message from Norton: "Your computer is halted and needs to do something about this script. Object: FileSystem Object, Activity: CreateTextFile, File: MsiExec.exe" It recommends stopping the script, which I've been doing. But I've noticed lately that whenever I try to install a Windows update, the update fails to install, and I get this pop-up for every update.
What should I do? I want to keep my computer updated, but I don't want to open up my computer to something malicious

First of all, get rid of Norton and get something else.

Second, hit yourself with a large hammer if you ever think of getting Norton again.

In the meantime run an online scanner and I think you'll find that Norton is giving you a false positive.

msiexec.exe belongs to the Windows Installer Component and is used to install new programs that use Windows Installer package files (MSI). This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

The above comes from here:

Apple: Definition: An electronics company that manufactures devices designed to give mentally disabled people self-esteem and a false sense of superiority.
