Subject: Major Network-wide issue (virus?)OS: VariousCPU/Ram: VariousManufacturer/Model: Various |
Comment: Hi, I encountered last night that typing the word "msn" in the address bar of my browser takes me to a unknown search engine: www23.entry-not-found.com/search?qo=msn&rn=<group of letters that changes each time>
This happens on all my computers, Windows and Linux. This also happens to all my web browsers, IE and Firefox. The search engine has a logo of my ISP on the left and powered by Yahoo search on the right with search in the middle.
As late as few hours before I encountered the issue, if I typed in "msn" it would take me to the msn web site from Firefox and to page not found in IE.
When I connect directly to the DSL modem, it works as I would expect. I only tried once. Also, if I completely disconnect any computer from internet and then type "msn" in address bar using Firefox, it tries to search google and then tells me page not found. I am using a belkin router.
Is it a virus, spyware, etc. or is my ISP messing me up? Can an ISP do that?
I have not made any major changes to my system. I ran Spybot and did not find anything. I ran McAfee Virus scan and did not find anything. I tried hijack this and it appears to be clean. I also tried combofix software and it was okay too. It found something called nircmd.exe, but I read that it was part of the combofix file. Also tried fixwareout to fix this issue, but failed. I consider myself as an advanced windows user, but I am unable to figure it out. Please help. Thanks very much.

Reply: Guess what, I have Windstream too in another state and I was able to resolve my own problem. I found a simple solution, BUT please do not close this thread because I would like to know why such a thing would happen and how to avoid it. By the way, I was using WPA security with MAC address filtering.
I found another router and the issue went away. So I decided to reset "infected" router to factory settings and and now (since 1 hour ago) it works just fine! What did this router-spyware do with my data? Is my password, bank data, ... hacked? Can it happen again? How do I avoid it? What exactly was it? Router virus maybe? That's mind-boggling.
If you have any idea what's going on, please post. Also, if you see this issue please post.

Reply: I live in Twinsburg, Ohio and have the same issue. The Windows XP Auto-Search Bar has been converted into: http://wwww23.entry-not-found.com/s... The page appears with a Windstream Logo on the top left and a Yahoo logo on the top right. It started today, Jan. 8, 2008. Likely a searchpage hijacker? Please advise!

Reply: RESOLVED -- See response # 2, but I need to know why this happened and how to avoid it. I will call Windstream if I have enough people with this complaint.
