Solved MacBook blocked from a website no matter what browser I use

June 14, 2012 at 12:47:10
Specs: Macintosh
I am blocked from one specific website after using a Chrome extension StayFocused. Even with the extension uninstalled I cannot access reddit.com from three different browsers. I contacted support from that builder and he says he can't help.

Using MacBook Pro 10.7.4

The answer is there in the ping. www.reddit.com is resolving to your loopback.

Check your hosts file.

/private/etc/hosts

What error are you receiving? Since it is system wide, it sounds like a hosts file entry. .

Browse to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

and open the hosts file with notepad. See if there is an entry for the website you're trying to reach. If there is, remove that line and save the file.

What happens if you try to ping the site?

Thanks, Tony. I'm using a Mac.

Haven't tried to ping yet. Looking up how to do it now.

The best answer was #9 which I found myself by searching online.

However, Tony's response in #5 helped me figure out what to look for.
