Subject: Lost connectivity to some web sites
Comment:

Hi !!

I've asked this question before but had no luck in resolving it and decided to re-image my HD.
Now after 4 months, the problem re-occured:

I somehow lost connectivity or been restricted to conect to the following sites:

HOTMAIL.COM, CNET.COM, CNNSI.COM, ZDNET.COM, PGATOUR.COM AND A FEW MORE.

I GET A BLANK SCREEN AFTER A LONG WAIT AND THEN , PAGE CANNOT BE FOUND ERROR MSG.

Here's my PC Configuration:

IE6
ABIT BE6 Motherboard
PC133 - 320 KB
Geforce2
2 hd - 20 G & 40 G
Windows 98 SE

Why all of a sudden I no longer have access to these sites?

I tried everything. Revove Virus protection soft. Firewall, uninstall IE , FIX IE6, enable and disable cookies, add those sites
to my trusted sites, clean tmp files & cookies.
Ran virus check and also used window washer. Basicaly everything I can image and requested by some friemds. NOTHING seems to get me past this issue.
Does anyone else incountered the same issue and was able to resvolve it. PLEASE HELP !!

Did you check in \Windows for a file named HOSTS (not the HOSTS.SAM file). If those URL's are listed in the file, it could be blocking your system from accessing them. You could some how be adding them to the list of blocked URL addresses.

Rocko,

Opne your internet explorer ---->
Tools----->Internet Options ---->
then goto ---->Security tab.

Cliock on the restricted sites list and see if there are any sites in there that shouldn't be there.

Remove them if they are... and you should be fine.

Rocko and Anna:

This could be the problem. If your browser does not have 128 bit encryption enabled, you won't be able to access sites that require passwords etc.

I don't remember how to check it in IE 5 unfortunately, but I'm sure it is somewhere on this forum.

Try this link from the Win Me forum. My daughter had that problem and it was a pain but it finally got resolved with help from this forum.

http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/21526.html

Just read the replies by "newgrl".

Then if that does not help, go on to this one:

http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/21642.html

again read posts by newgrl.

She posts a link the the Micorsoft data base that explains and tells how to correct it. article Q261328 Also read that article.

Hope this helps. If it is not because the 128 bit encryption is missing, then I don't know what else to tell you.

You can try searching all the message boards, you will probably come up with a lot of related posts that way.

Good luck!

I found the way to check if 128 bit ecnryption is enabled:

click on Help in IE (any version). Then click on about. There it will tell you if you have it.

If you don't, then follow my suggestions above.
