Subject: Lopdotcom and Spysweeper?OS: xp proCPU/Ram: 512 |
Comment: Hi guys, I recently bought webroot spysweeper and when I run the scan, it says my quick launch explorer shortcut next to the start button is infected with lop.com! When it deletes the shortcut, and I create a new shortcut for ie and drag n drop it back on the taskbar and scan again, it says the same thing!! I have run ad-aware, spybot s&d and pest patrol trial version, but they don't say anything about it! Any ideas? Thanks!

Reply: That's strange because AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy both target and remove lop. Unless lop put out a new variant that hasn't been picked up yet. You can use HijackThis to identify and remove the offending files.

Reply: If it is there, you do need to reboot to nail lop. Both Adaware and Spybot may need to be fully updated and configured to pick up and remove newer types of lop. Ensure the updates, do the reboots after any removal. If Adaware and Spybot come up clean; and Spysweeper still says it is there; i'd tend to trust Adaware and SSD. To make sure, post a Hijack log after following the forum guidelines.

Reply: I can't explain why it's saying your shortcut icon is infected with lop but someone posted on another forum who was using ie-spyad (adds items to the restricted sites list in IE). Spysweeper flagged some items from the restricted sites list as being on his computer. They weren't actually on his computer but in his restricted sites list only. Is this the program that scans your computer for free but then you have to pay them to remove what they find?

Reply: hmmm...I gave Spysweeper a test download and install after running Adaware & Spybot scans and coming up clean. The program installed well and looked good and worked. Tested all apps afterwards and the Adaware reference file was corrupted. Uninstall new program. Re-install Adaware. Enough said.
