Looking for Reliable Computer Software Protection :

I’m seeking to protect my computer with one of more software programs that protect against: - malicious viruses, spam, unwanted pop-ups, identity theft, spyware, etc, etc. This might also include firewall protection.

I have two computers: - (1) a circa 1998 Pentium II Gateway desktop … that I plan to replace with a Dell desktop soon; and (2) a circa 2006 Dell Latitude D820 laptop. I also use Windows XP Pro (Version 5.1 … Service Pack 3).

Do I assume correctly that there is no single program that “does it all” … and there are some useful freeware out there as well? Are we therefore speaking of combinations of software to maximize protection here?

BTW I’m only semi-literate in such matters … so I’m hoping to get some sound advice from you more experienced types … plain language please … with minimal jargon and buzzwords ... and as simple as feasible.

P.S. – I’m also interested in finding a glossary of computer protection terms so I know better what I’m talking about < grin >.

Many thanks.

A lot of people say that Norton and McAfee are the best, but I believe different. I use windows Live One care, which can protect up to 3 computers at once. It has handy tools like back-up, tuneup, and single file scanning. It has a built in firewall also. My personal experience with this software is this:
Short version
Big virus, wiped out McAfee off my computer, Installed this, gone within a few hours. Also a lot of people say that KasperSky is the #1 rated Anti virus software. I guess its our choice!!
