I ran LiveUpdate, and it performed a virus definitions download, but the virus definitions date did not change. I have followed all the 'known issue' stuff on Symantec.com including complete un&re-install of all Norton programmes. I have NAV, Personal Firewall & Utilities (not Systemworks). However same problem...any ideas anyone?

Have you upgraded LIVE UPDATE fron 1.6 to 1.7. I had NORTON SYSTEM WORKS 2001, and was having the same problem, the change to 1.7 fixed it. I thought it was supposed to have been updated automatically, but it never did. It just stopped working one day. It was a pain to find on the SYMANTEC SITE, do a Google Search.

With my Norton 2001 it won't show the new number until
I close it & reopen it, it used to show it right away
but no longer does without closing & reopening it.

I had this problem too. I uninstalled all Norton products --everything! i then re-installed and everything is cool....it is worth a try.

I re-install Norton all the time. I use WinME and Norton is not a happy camper with it all of the time. Have you run a system restore lately....That can make Norton wacky, too.
