My Symantec Anti-Virus definitions are out of date. When I try and run Live update, it appears to be working. First it downloads the necessary data and then when I hit finish it goes into an Update mode. It reaches 99% then sits for about 5 minutes and goes away. The definitions do not update.
I can not figure out what to do to get my definitions updated and my computer back to a safe mode again. Also, when I try and run the virus checker, it immediately ends. It used to run for over an hour.

I would do a online scan and see whats up.
Symantic is not in its self immune from a virus disabling it.

Update the definitions from the Symantec website and run a full scan.
Life's more painless for the brainless.

Worldlibrary,
How do I perform an online scan? I have heard about viruses which disable Symantic but I can not find anything on how to find and get rid of such a virus. That is what I am leaning towards as being my problem. I just can not find anything on how to do it. Thanks!
Jennifer SUMN,
Same question to you. How do I perform a scan against the definitions on the Symantec website? I thought that would be a good way to find and get rid of any viruses should I have one. Again, I just can't find anything on how to do that. Thanks!
All,
Just to provide more information, I am also experiencing a serious drop in disk space. It seems as if once a week, the percentage of free space drops another percentage. My computer is now down to 17% free space. I have no idea what to do to free up the space. I don't know what is taking all of the space. Again, I am hoping that this is all part of the same issue and if I solve one, I have solved both.
