Subject: Laptop runs slow when on LAN
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Dell 8100
Comment:

I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWshredder. I have spywareBlaster. I was infected with gibe.b and mofei.b worms. I cleaned them up but my laptop still runs slow when connected to the LAN at the local library. It seems ok at home. Does my HiJackThis log show anything?

I noticed in your running processes that you have SVChost.exe running twice. These are most likely the problem. If you look at your processor usage for these two, they are probably hogging all of the processor time. You can just kill those processes and that should get you speeding up again. Hope this helps

Please ignore my above post, I got mixed up with the process I was talkinga bout, it should have said wsscript.exe and I noticed that you don't have that in your processes. That is the process that was causing me greif, sorry about that.

You are right about svchost.exe. My process explorer shows FOUR (4) instances of it running and at times Services is hogging the CPU. Now how did 4 instances get launched? How can I correct this? Thanks for your help. I really appreciate this forum and I thank the members for unselfishly helping so many users.

I removed internat.exe but problem persists. Services.exe every so often hogs the cpu 97% enven 100% bringing everything to a halt. I am running Windows 2000 with SP4. Any other ideas?

From a forum in Annoyances.org I learned that my problem (Services.exe using 90-100% of CPU)was caused by a large (138KB) HOSTS file. I renamed the file and I am ok now (but vulnerable). Don't know whether this is unique to Windows 2000 SP4.
