Comment: Hi the klez virus is goin around and has any one heard about w32.klez.gen@mm-is this a diffennt type of the klez virus? I cant find a clean-up for this one. I downloaded Fixklez from the symantic site and it reports I am clean but some-one just told me I sent them that virus from my computer. Another question, fixklez told me to disable my system restore so I did but everytime I went to run the fixklez program it told me it was still enabled, so I did it again then rebooted into safemode ran fixklez but same response. Any ideas?. I run nav 2001 and always do my live update. So is there ant way to find out if in fact I have this virus or worm? everything is working okay and no-one else in my e-mail address book got this virus from me. I'm starting to wonder if this is a hoax or not. George.

Reply: Actually, some versions of the Klez virus will spoof the sender of its e-mails. So a virus mail that seems to be coming from you actually comes from someone else that is infected with the virus. This behaviour is documented by symantec: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.gen@mm.html Email spoofing Some variants of this worm use a technique known as "spoofing." If it does this, it chooses at random an address that it finds on an infected computer as the "From:" address that it uses when it performs its mass-mailing routine. Numerous cases have been reported in which users of uninfected computers receive complaints that they have sent an infected message to someone else.

Reply: I understand the virus goes into infected computers address book and gets 2 names. 1 name is the new phony sender and the other recieves the virus. The infected computer is not identified. the "sender" didn't actually send it to you.
