Do Kerio and Sygate share files with other programs? And are they easy to uninstall?

Both are easy to remove. Kerio can be used as a sophisticated rule based firewall, depending on your computer knowledge and skills. It has a very small footprint and uses very little system reources. Sygate is very easy to configure and use, and is the best firewall for those that do not like using advanced settings and rules. It can also be configured using advanced rules if that is what you want. I am not sure what you mean by sharing files.

Thanks for the reply Capt! I like to do a lot of research before downloading anything.

What I mean by file sharing is:

I have leftovers on my PC like Mcafee, Norton and Disney. They share files so I left them there to avoid problems if I removed them. I'm not PC savvy so if I can't run the firewalls I mentioned I don't want problems after I remove them. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

I see, when you uninstalled, the warning screen that asks about deleting shared files came up. I have not seen that screen for Sygate or Kerio when I have uninstalled them. One thing about Kerio, it does have a startup splash screen, as does the free version of Zone Alarm. I mention this because some people hate splash screens, and do not want to have them.

Do you recommend leaving the flash screen or disabling it? If I need help with Kerio I will post back.

I think what he is referring to is the dll files, usually a warning comes up asking you not to remove the file, since it might be used by another program. If your hd is big enough leaving these extra files on the hd won't harm or slow down your computer.

Downloaded Kerio and it's not going well. No uninstall option that I can see. I'm getting bombed(20 at a time) with permit/deny windows. Pages can't be displayed, can't use the back here I have to refresh each time. Having problems opening home page, yahoo or my email. My resources dropped yesterday. At setup I denied all impc echo request (tcpip kernel driver) from Monarch, quickclic and permitted all from my ISP. Should I have denied all? I unchecked allow microsoft network name resolution, unchecked allow others to users to access my shared folders/printer? What are monarch and quickclic? What are icmp packets? And Net Blos packet? It was a nightamre trying to post seemed to be hanging up.

Really appreciate any help!

There should be an uninstall option using Programs>Kerio>you will see a list and uninstall should be there. You can always use the add/remove programs to uninstall Kerio. Many people will only remove a program this way. I thought, I made it qiite clear that Kerio was for people with a fair amount of computer skills and knowledge. Did you read the user manual on how to use the program? Have you gone to the Kerio forum and their support area?

Capt, Thanks for your patients! I trust this forum and find it very helpful all other forum I just lurk. I have read a lot of posts on Kerio, sygate and zone alarm. What I found was very technical. I did read the user guide. I change a setting to permit unknown and have full use of my PC. It was clear that any fire wall was going to be a learning experience. I need a fire wall and spygate seemed to be getting kick around so I went with Kerio. No uninstall in programs>kerio or the folder.

Thanks Frank, That's why I left it on the hd.

You can check the various programs to see if they are needed for your system to work. Just click a limited permission(yes, but not always allow), and see what happens. I set my logs and warnings to run silently, as you do get bombarded. In most cases there is nothing you can do anyway, so I let the firewall do its job. You can go into the applications and remove items and let Kerio start and set its rules over again. Remember it is better to err on safety than leave things wide open. If you cannot get access to what you want/need, you reconfigure it, it is no big deal. PC Flank and Gibson Research have scans that will test the firewall to make sure it is working properly.

I thought about uninstalling it and deny everything even my ISP but I wondered would I lose my internet access all together. Does this make sense? I ran two tests at PC Flank all safe except my browser. I took it as meaning IE/OE? Thinking about going to Mozilla..... first I have to conquer Kerio. I will run the Gibson scan and see how that goes.

Browser setttons are always a compromise. If you set them to high you cannot surf the net. Do not go crazy by not allowing everything. You can set it to ask you for permision, then after several access requests you will know what is needed, and then you can grant permanent access. Things that I grant permanent access are IE, Windows Media Player, Real Player after I have disabled all of its cookies and indentifiers, my antivirus software updates.
