my friend is having problems with there computer and i would just like a generalized opinion on what could be wrong.
their computer runs very slow, they have kazza (AAGGHH) but there internet still runs as fast as mine. Would a virus make there computer run slowly but not affect their internet? Ill be going over there tomorrow to run some virus scans and etc but whenever i have had viruses my internet will run slow. you know how when you start your computer up and your desktop comes up, well when theirs comes up it goes all black and then slowly the black goes away kinda like puzzle pieces its really wierd looking. anyhow im just wondering if this could be caused by a virus or is it more likely it has something to do with their hard drive??

"they have kazza"

While they could have a virus you are going to fine a ton of spyware as well. Make sure you bring Spybot and Ad-Aware with you as well. Also be prepared to to start the system in safe mode to remove the P2P program that Kazza installs and can only be removed via safe mode. Also bring Hijackthis and CWShredder and install Spyware Blaster as well. Make sure you update the programs before you run them.

Also bring some snacks, you will be there for awhile cleaning this one up. Sounds like your classic spyware infection and you might have a virus, trojan or worm as well.

It can be a variety of things from low diskspace, low RAM to even a virus, worm or various forms of malware. They might have a fast internet connection, but problems may be local and have more to do with system specs or programs installed. Kazaa usually helps viruses spread from host machines and some files even turn out to be viruses in disguise.

Ensure you run a full Virus Scan with any of the top 3 such as Norton, McAfee or NOD32, an online scan might be unsuitable at this stage.

After doing the above, I suggest you do a full system scan in SAFE mode with following programs after the definitions have been updated, simply download from the sites below:-

Ad-Aware

SpyBot S&D

SpywareBlaster

CWShredder

BHO Demon

Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner

Hijack-This

[NOTE: SpywareBlaster should be simply installed and updated, whereas HijackThis can be used to submit logs.]

Hope That Helps.

Just to say, get shot of the spyware with other programs before running SpywareBlaster (they suggest this).

SpywareBlaster doesn't fix malware but it stops it from taking hold in the first place.
