Did you try running av software in safe mode? You could try uninstalling AVG in safe also if thats what you want to do.

Here's a link to a forum with someone that had a very similar problem. They managed to fix it with AV software. Might help to have a look at it:

seems like virus doesn't like AVG or the virus changed somthing so you can't run or search for it?

I would check your data/time settings also, make sure those haven't been changed, AVG won't run if those are not current. It will show up as grey in the system tray.

Boot to safe mode rename hijackthis to something random and do a scan.

randallatha, you said Norton would run fine...is Norton installed on your PC?

Norton will stop any AV from running unless you use the norton uninstaller from their website: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...
Untill ALL Norton remnants are cleaned out...no other AV will run properly, that is a proven fact.
You may also want to use regcleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4...
to clean out all Norton, Symantec entries.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results as it will help others.
