Comment:

I have recently downloaded SpywareBlaster. Seemed like a good program that sets the machine to prevent malware.

When getting Updates my Kerio firewall came up with a TCP (Out) Port 80 without which it was unable to Update. That seemed reasonable so I made a rule to allow this.

Then Kerio reported SpywareBlaster UDP (Out) involving Real.com images to 127.0.0.1 (I use a hosts file - read only). I made a rule denying this.

Should I assume from this last one that SpywareBlaster is itself is a dubious program?

Derek

No! It just blocks active x hijacks. It makes no outgoing requests, unless you are trying to get the latest updates for it.

Thanks folks. I'll assume SpywareBlaster is safe.

Just the same it was "Kerio firewall" that blocked the real.com UDP (Out) that had SpywareBlaster.exe origins, as eventually defined by the new rule it suggested - ActiveX or whatever.

Still have some problem understanding why SpywareBlaster didn't just block this silently in it's own right because this is the sort of thing it purports to do.

If I'm a bit thick on this I'd be happy for my weird thoughts to be explained away.

Your bet is to ask Java Cool, I never
had that come up, using Outpost or Sygate.

Just to say that it was all explained via the link in #4.

There's no problem with SpywareBlaster, it just picked up my first text entry in hosts. On their advice I have made the first entry:

127.0.0.1 localhost

This will also prevent confusion if it should happen with any similar program.

Thanks again abnormal and to everyone that mucked in. I've learned something!
