I have had AVG antivirus (the free version) for a few months. Around once an hour or so, a little message box pops up saying that AVG know's there is a virus and shows the the location, and then tells me to run AVG to get rid of it.
Problem is, I run AVG (the latest version available) and it doesn't find anything.
I run AVG about every 5 days, and it's said I've had numerous viruses that keep hanging around (Dumarin, sometimes MyDoom (it seems to actually find and remove this one), now Agent.2).
Why is it finding the viruses but not removing them? If the free version of AVG is crap, then I'm willing to pony up some cash to get something worthwhile, I'm so sick of this virus stuff. So if the free AVG (along with AdAware and Spybot S&D and ZoneAlarm) isn't enough, then what antivirus program do I need?
Thanks
I downloaded and installed SP2 today and still am having the same problems. However, the Microsoft firewall didn't get along with my ZoneAlarm(free version), and I had to shut down ZA to make my internet work!? Now I'm using the new Windows firewall. Is it good? Or is ZA better?

cdogg44,
"...a little message box pops up saying that AVG know's there is a virus and shows the the location, and then tells me to run AVG to get rid of it."
What/where, is it located, and the name of virus, and file(s) it tellsd about?
(for instance, are they/it in the restore? Is it/ are they, in the temporary internet folder, or the temp folder)
"...keep hanging around (Dumarin, sometimes MyDoom (it seems to actually find and remove this one), now Agent.2)."
Again, where are they located, and where does it say, they are? AdAware and/or Spybot S&D, have you kept them updated.
p.s. What type of internet connection, do you have? Also, when you were using ZA. Did/were things wanting access, to the internet, besides the normal?
I'll Try

The XP firewall only stops incoming traffic and Zone Alarm allows you to control both incoming and outgoing traffic, so it is better to use Zone Alarm. Using twirewalls is never a good idea.
For your virus, is the file listed as in use or in the restore files. Have you turned system restore off and restarted the computer and duuring the boot sequence entered the safe mode and ran AVG's scan while in the sfae mode. Have you used any of the free online scans from Panda, Symantec or one of the best scans at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ ?

hi cdogg44,
you get what you pay for.
why not try a free 30 day trial of nod32, or kapersky labs, or hauri.
nod32, www.nod32.com
kapersky labs, www.kapersky.com
hauri, www.hauriusa.net
they all have a free 30 day trials, and if they solve your problem, fine, if not keep avg.
all the best,
murve

I like Norton antivirus 2004 pro or Norton antivirus 2005. Norton antivirus 2004 pro is cheap now I have seen it as low as 19.99 online it's probably 29.99 in stores. Or you can get Norton Antivirus 2005 for 49.95, not much diff between the 2. I think Norton Antivirus is way overpriced when the new ones first comes out that's why I wait until the end of the year sales.

Ok:
1. I'll wait around for them to pop up, and copy down their locations so I can let you guys know. I do always update (or check for updates) AdAware and S&D before I run them.
2. When I was using ZA, suspicious things tried to access the internet occasionally, and I blocked them. My main problem with ZA is that now that I downloaded Service Pack 2, ZA won't let me access the internet. I had to turn it off, then Windows freaked out because there wasn't any firewall, so I turned on the Windows firewall. I'd like to have ZA back, but not at the expense of the internet!
3. I don't know anything about the system restore, or turning it off, but I bet that's where my problem is. I have used the free Pandascan from their website several times, and it used to work great for the hard to get stuff, but now it comes up with nothing at all.
4. I agree, free stuff isn't the best. However, it had been working fine for the most part until the last few months. I'll definately check into those free 30 day trials. I didn't know they had those kind of offers.
5. I'll also look around for a good sale on Norton.
Thanks to all.
I'll update if anything changes.

BTW, this is on a cable connection. And my computer is "asleep" from probably midnight-3:00PM. If that matters.

10 bucks says the virus is in a temp folder. If so, Panda Online can get rid of it. Just to let you know, it may be the java.Byteverify trojan. Everytime I have had trouble getting rid of a virus or trojan, it is because of that exact one.
I get it a lot using Sun java, but what I do is go into the java folder and delete all the .jar files from the site I visited, and boom, it's gone. Turn off system restore until you find it and get rid of it. Then, turn System Restore back on. That seems to keep it out of System Restore.
If it gets in there, it will keep on re-infecting you.

By the way, AVG did that exact same thing to me when I had that trojan. I use Nod32 now and even it has trouble with it. It will quarantine two instances and leave the rest alone. If it is that particular trojan, your best bet is going to be deleting the files it infected manually.

Maybe try Avast! 4 home edition
I started using it after AVG wouldn't up-date on-line anymore and I've found Avast! to be real good with free on-line up-dates as you surf the net...sometimes FREE is good.
If you need a simple solution, try mine. I try to give advise on things that have happened to my PC. Changes in registry can be FATAL! Glad to have a chance to help you.

Cdogg
AVG free edition is junk spend some cash and get yourself a decent anti virus program run the updates after installing . To clean anything you have now go www.trendmicro.com and download their free virus scanner and see what you really have and it will also clean your computer and you can buy from them . You can Also use Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
This is a free cleaner of any worms and trojans or viruses and they add new lists every day. Also its never a good idea to run Windows Xp firewall with another firewall at the same time the result is a bad mixture of the 2. Either turn off the Xp fire wall or get rid of Zone Alarm but beware Zone Alarm has a way of discouraging people in the past from taking their products off the computer so be careful removing it. Its a control issue with them. Hope this helps you Wiz

Never had any problem with AVg ,been running it for 2 years . Besides any ISP that is worth anything should be picking off 99% of viruses up at the mail server before it even gets to you . If you are getting a lot of emails with viruses then it's time to look for a different ISP .

Dude if you have been picking up My Doom then you need to get the freakin XP and IE critical updates. Thought sp2 was supposed to have them upto date - all included?
Also sp2 was suppose to make their firewall 2-way , like any good wall is,...wtf?

Hmmm.....
Im running Black Ice, XP SP2, a win 2k proxy server, Nat on the router, and AVG.
Virus free over 2 years now. Wife occasionally gets spyware junk, but SB S&D and Spywareblaster and Adaware6 and Popup stopper usually catch it and emove it.
First, get AVG to update. Reinstall if necessary. Remove restore point, reboot, run AVG.
Curious, you dont do any P2P do you?
I wish I lived in Theory. Everything works in Theory.
