Comment:

I searched this site and Lavasoft's site but the best I can figure is that it is free only to download.

Others had "told me" that in order for it to remove something you now have to pay.

I have an older version I run on my home PC (not in a while) and it was free for personal use.

Does anyone know if this is true or false?

(Can't put it on my work PC where I am now.)

Thanks and regards,
Bryan

Correct me if i'm wrong, but it appears that even the better spyware programs miss things as i saw on the October testing at spywarewarrior.com.And none of them appeared to have what you would call a stellar detection rate.So my advice would be to look at these tests and select 2 to compliment each other. One would be strong in an area that the other wasn't.

Not exactly news - it's (fairly) well known that you just can't rely on any one scanner for 100% protection - against anything

G'day Bryco ( from our W98 days ) here is another that will clean even better, good to see you have SP2.
What it does, sometimes during the search, it offers choices of what to do with files found, which can be a bit daunting.
All these choices, like > Ask, can ( after research or your own knowledge of what you have installed ) be changed. In the Status window, the Protection ( in the middle of the page ) section, click on the files found.
It also finds uninstall exe's, which I change to > Allow.

How do you stop spycatcher from running at startup?I couldn't find anything in the program itself to disable this feature.I deleted those entries in the startup processes list but they reappeared on the next boot.It wasn't getting along with my AV and Kerio all loading at the same time.

Where or how did you do that?

Thank you all for your input.

I am at home now and just ran my installed version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 where the executable shows version 6.2.0.236 and it would appear to be the same as the current downloadable version offered via Lavasoft's site from the linked mirror of Download.com's site being 1.06 (athough it does not show 1.06r1).

I proudly boast that it only finds a tracking cookie now and then and I am not concerned about them.

I am quite versed in the alternative freebies that can be used to detect/irradicate spy/malware. But, thanks just the same as if I didn't. (LOL to Jboy's comments :))

My concern was based on a couple of people telling me that after they run it and then attempt to remove what it had found then they would be prompted to pay a $29 fee to be able to do so.

My contention was that they had not gotten the Lavasoft version of the product and had gotten one of the lookalike spinoffs.

I also now see comparing both my current and the downloadable version that the license agreements have the same wording that includes the word "Purchase" several times:
Quote (excerpt)
1. License Grant
This License permits you, as purchaser of the Software, to use one copy of the Software solely for your use on one computer per purchased copy of the software...
and
2. Standard Maintenance and Support
All updates/upgrades for your purchased edition (regardless of build or version) are free of charge for the year following your purchase of the Software.
End of excerpted quotes

I could have sworn that in the past they had wording on Lavasoft's site that contained the wording "Free for personal use" and suggested purchasing a license for commercial use. I am unable to locate any such wordings on their site now.

Seeing everyone's input here I can now confidently tell these people to go ahead and download the correct download rather than the wrong one they already have.

Thanks again,
Bryan

Obviously, i must have worded that wrong to draw that responce. What i normally do and there are at least 2 ways that i know of, is go into cc cleaner which shows the programs that will run at startup and delete that entry. It's worked for me many times but the entry for spycatcher would always return. This is why i was asking.Your recommending spycatcher so i figured you would know how to stop it loading at startup.

Ok, it was not specific enough murr,I would never have guessed ccleaner.
I have mine enabled & do something else for 2 or 3 minutes.
I am not recommending any programs, just offering choices, have no idea of peoples skill level & all the other factors that come into play.
4 ways you can disable it from startup, shall list 3.
1. Start > All Programs > Startup, right click on Spycatcher & hit Delete.
2. Use msconfig
3. Use Startup Control Panel

Yes, i've used those options before but didn't try them this time because it's worked for me through cc cleaner the last few times and i thought it was doing the same thing as msconfig. So i was thinking if there was something to delete in the program files to stop it from loading. There is a conflict with it and or F-secure ,Kerio when everything is loading at startup. My system froze so i uninstalled. If you don't know any other way, i'll try again in a few weeks and use msconfig this time. Thanks for helping.

murr, must admit, I mean't to look in ccleaner at those options, but forgot, they should work the same as msconfig, maybe the 2 entries needed to be disabled.
I use Avast & because I have SP2, use the XP firewall. One firewall running is enough.
You may be able to get more info from the Event viewer, re your freeze.

Or,
Start > Run, copy & paste > eventvwr.msc /s & press Enter.
Scroll down to the last time your computer crashed and it should tell you what device/driver caused the problem?

I will try that.Just a question. You seem fairly knowledgeable and post in this forum often. Was wondering why then, your still using a setup of windows firewall{ only works one way} and Avast{ Antivir has better detection rates of the free ones}.
