Invisible virus in WinUpdate.exe

April 16, 2009 at 10:06:39
Specs: Windows XP
So, stupid as it may be, I recently used a keygen by EDGE. After I was done with it, I deleted it (not Recycle Bin, deleted). Now, it pops up every time I boot into XP. Using the Processes tab of Task Manager, I found it is tied to WinUpdate.exe. I know this is a common container for viruses.

Here's the problem: neither Avira Antivir, Adaware, MalwareBytes, nor Norton Security Scanner can detect it. Being in System32, I cannot remove it. What do I do???

If it's in the System32 folder then it's been put there by malware - do a google on it & you'll see it's a regular nasty. You can stop it from running in Task Manager and then delete it/rename it but I'd suspect you've got more than just the one bit of malware - try one of the on-line scans like Kaspersky or Trend.

I knew it was a nasty. That's why I'm trying to get SOMETHING to detect it, as I cannot manually remove it. I'm....having difficulties getting TrendMicro's HouseCall to run. The bar is moving, but it still says idle. I may try Kapersky soon. What do I do if nothing detects it though?
