I'm trying to clean up my brother's system which was pretty badly infected. I think I've almost got it done but two things still persist. In the system tray there’s an alerting to a virus found that if I click on starts Explorer and goes to an add for Antivigear. The other thing is if I just start Explorer, even after changing the homepage, it goes to an add for Malwareburn?

I've run both Windows Defender and Malicious Software Removal Tool but neither one finds anything else?

hello there
you can also try manual antivirgear removal. it's not as complicated as it might look at the first sight.

So all I have to do is remove the strings the link provides in the system registry?

yes, but you need to delete several files as well. if you have some questions regarding to manual removal, there are tutorials provided on the removal, like 'how to kill malicious processes', 'how to remove registry entries' etc.
good luck!

You wouldn't happed to have a list of the files that need deleting would you? Or are the files different for each system?

sorry, i've misunderstood your earlier question:| if you delete everything that the antivirgear removal lists as malicious entries, your system should be clear.
