Comment: Hello everyone, This is my first post on these boards since I have not had any problems with viruses (that I know of) since getting my new PC.
That all changed today though, when my CD-ROM / DVD Drive starting opening and closing of its own accord. I appear to be the victim of some kind of browser infiltration, as I have definately not accepted to download suspicious files NOR have I opened *any* email attachments. What I have done is to open the PC and disconect the CD Drive from the IDE cable and the power supply. This has stopped the drive going crazy, but I am sure that it will start doing it again if I was to plug it back in. So my question is this: How can I get rid of the virus (I assume that is what it is)? Is there any freeware out there that will remove it for me? I dont currently have any anti-virus software (I know, I know!) so I was asking for it really, wasnt I. If anyone has the answer I would be eternally greatfull as I do want to use my CD Drive again at some point in the future!!! Thanks, Simon.

Reply: (edit)Simon.I would go to TrendMicro.com and do the on-line av scan. It's called "house call".It's a free service. You will have to wait a while for the program to download and install on your pc.After it installs, run the scan on your pc and see what it finds. No av software? Here are some suggestions, freeware(AVG from grisoft.com)or try a trial version of Norton,NOD32(by eset,LLC)or Kapersky(a little pricy). If you want some test reviews,go to VirusBulletinAwards and check under windows98 test results.Hope this helps.JB

Reply: (edit)in relation to what TheKid said, more than likley if you re-attach the Ide and Power if it carries on (friend had same problem, reconected problem left, AV didnt pick it up) if not look in Ctrl-alt-del if its very simple it might be in there, if not go to start>run and type Msconig, stop anything that looks suspicious, but be careful you dont disable anything important

Reply: (edit) Well, I had rebooted my machine several times and even unplugged it from the wall and it still does it the MOMENT that I switch my PC on.
The same second that I press the "On" stitch, before ANY BIOS settings are being verified or anything, the CD Drive is opening and closing. I am running the Trend Micro "House Call" scan now, so I will see what it brings up. Thank you everyone for your information. Simon.

Reply: (edit)i thought i read somewhere that if the drive detects something wrong, it will open and close like that to let you know that something's wrong...since there isn't any other way to signal it to you (it's not like it can make a window pop up on your screen).

Reply: (edit)I believe it is a hardware problem. I have seen this 2 times. & both times i was able to fix it by 'resyncing' to the proper tooth, the in-out gear had slipped a notch & confuses CD rom into believing its open when not (or vice versa) & the command keeps repeating in out in out. This was caused by MANUALLY pushing in the CD drawer TOO fast or hard, thats why it is recommended to always use the button instead of manually for closing drawer. As Steve said above a switch problem. 1 time i had to open up the cd & actually repair it that way & the other time i actually talked a friend into fixing it himself (over phone) by giving it a short tug while on its way back in (slipping it back a tooth) & it has worked fine for 2 years now. If not a hardware problem, i would delete it from your DEVICE MANAGER & reboot & let windows reinstall it. Could also be a virus guess.

Reply: (edit)Almost certainly a hardware fault. The fact that it starts as soon as the PC is switched on means that there is no time for a virus to load up (unless it has damaged the BIOS, which is unlikely). Thry plugging the CD ROM onto the power, but not the IDE cable. If it persists, then it it definately the drive.

Reply: (edit) Thanks to everyone who has written on this thread. I have since tried Anti Virus scans and Trojan scans (the ones recommended above) but neither of them bring anything up. I dont need to have my CD Drive plugged in when I run the tests do I? It is still unplugged at the moment.
I think next I will try deltaseven's suggestions of determining whether it is the Drive itself or the PC. I must stress again that the CD Drive starts opening and closing THE MOMENT that I press the on button on the front of the PC. If anyone has any new suggestions I would love to hear them! Thanks Simon.
