IE will not connect to internet anymore

July 26, 2010 at 15:33:33
Specs: Windows XP
I got infected a couple of weeks ago. Task mgr would no longer open along with similar problems and the Virus kept opening IE (I shut my router off at the 1st sign of infection). I seem to be virus free now, but IE no longer connects to the internet. FireFox works just fine. I have tried many things... lastly I uninstalled then reinstalled IE8 to no avail. Your help would me much appreciated.

Thank You,

Peter D. Holmes

I changed those and a bunch of other things shortly after my posting. Got it working but not sure what fixed it. Now my other programs like Spybot and a real time stock screen work again. I knew they would if IE would work again. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

You're welcome. And usually when you're infected with a redirect virus (which hijacks your DNS settings), it changes IE/whatever web browsers you have to use a proxy to redirect you to malicious sites. In the future, I would look into using OpenDNS (it's free): , if you don't want to sign up for an account, you can just use their servers manually by changing your your TCP/IP settings:

For "Preferred DNS Server" type in and for "Alternate DNS Server" type in

OpenDNS won't prevent you from getting the Google Redirect Virus (at least to my knowledge), but it will provide you with safer, and faster browsing as opposed to your original ISP.

Thx for the added info!!. I will try using OpenDSN today. It sounds like by using it I will be browsing using a different IP, is that correct?
