I have a desktop running windows 98. I have cable internet. Though I have the latest anti-virus software, I dont have a firewall. The problem is, I am pretty sure someone has installed a trojan on my computer. Whenever I open internet explorer some ad or the other pops up and as I browse, random ads keep popping up. This happens only when I have IE running. With netscape I have no such problems. I installed and ran the Moosoft trojan cleaner but it did not catch anything. How can I get rid of this nuisance. Formatting the hard drive is not an option at this point.

Thanks,
Ram.

Some mroe information. In the IE settings, in the Tools>Internet options>Connections>LAN settings>...I see that the Use automatic configuration script has been checked and "http://proxy:8080" is the proxy being used. I deleted it and unchecked the option and checked the automatically detect settings check box. It worked fine till a new ad popped up. I went back in and saw that the proxy reappeared. No such settings are there in Netscape. How can get rid of the proxy from my IE.

Thanks,
Ram.

Try Wilders.Org website and get Lavasoft's Ad-aware and/or SpyBot, and they should get rid of your problem. Then get and install a firewall from the same website. Go to PC Pitstop andd run their full performance scan to make sure your security settings are set. Take care and all the best!

i think if you run it through a proxy u could avoid the pop ups. if you're on aol or cs, forget it. its automatically configured! try ad aware or get zone alarm pro 3. it kills all those pop ups quickly.
