After getting infected with USspyPC, I did several things that I thought had removed all the offending files. But now when I open my internet explorer, I only have one blank bar above the address bar instead of (1) the bar with the drop-down menus "File," "Edit," "View," etc., and (2) the bar that begins with the Back arrow. How can this be repaired? Reinstalling didn't help.

I see you mentioned IE Repair in the subject line. Have you tried running it? I'm a W98SE type and on that you get the option by going to Control Panel/Add-Remove and double clicking the entry "Microsoft IE & Tools".

It might be different with W2k but I rather doubt it. Someone will confirm or advise.

DerekW, I don't see this under add/remove programs. In fact, although I uninstalled and reinstalled IE and got confirmation, it doesn't even show up now in the add/remove program list. (And IE usually works "normally" with the correct bars at the top when it is called by email messages from within my SBC Yahoo browser - just not when I click on the desktop icon or try to run the actual IE exe file.)

If you've re-installed IE that ought to be as good as repair anyway. Seems like either a file or registry entry is corrupted. I'd better leave you to await a dedicated W2k person.

.... one last thing before I move on. Did you run through the removal procedure here (including registry entries)?

Thanks, Derek. I did find and delete some of these registry keys. I'll keep my fingers crossed...

No joy, Derek. Rebooted, the registry keys I deleted are still gone, but IE still has the same problem. The Symantec site mentioned occasional random additions to the registry, but I would think reinstalling IE would fix that.

I suppose it's just possible that IE re-install might now do better (as the bad reg entries have gone). Sounds like that is no longer an easy option though.

Sorry, can't think of much more. Let's hope you get some fresh ideas from someone.

Good luck.

I had this same problem. It also somehow corrupted and crashed Norton AntiVirus. A System Restore solved both problems.
