i have recently came across an unkown virus i have norton 2002 and pest control wich pest control detected it but unfortunelly i had a power outage and i had to restart my pc when i did i ran a scan with norton an pest control and there was nothing to be found so i thaught i was in the clear when my pc would start freezeing so i ran another virus scan and found nothing and then realized my firewall wasnt working properly and what i mean by not working properly if my firewall detected a breach it wasnt logging it. so i decided to format my hard drive and reinstalled xp wich went fine untill i installed my firewall and antivirus software when i kept on getting error messages like it couldnt find certian files so i went out and got mcafee internet security thinking it might of been the software i had and installed that and made a boot scan disk from another pc. same problem. so then i called Dell about the problem and they suggested we do a fdisk ,and debugged my pc and reconfiged my bios wich all of that still didnt work.so now i dont know what to do. does anybody have any ideas our what might be wrong

could be hard drive problems rather than a virus. if you think it's bios release cmos memory. there's a bios battery which will release the values. this will reset to default bios values. bios is rom so it's very doubtful the virus can alter that. if that doesn't work then most likely hardware problem. either hard drive or motherboard. ask dell at this point of warranty.

recent bioses are "flash" ugradeable, no longer can the "BIOS is ROM" hold up.
