Hey Everyone,
How's it going? Let me try to make this simple: I want the best anti-virus scanner software for a personal computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Let me point out that I know a lot of people will say that there is no single best AV scanner and it's up to a person's opinion. I understand that, so I am looking for the best scanner that is recommended by people who know this thing well.

The details:
-I do not care how much it costs. I will spend money on a good software once and hope that I do not have to again anytime in the near future.
-Looking for a scanner that is good with cleaning up viruses and problems that are found (very important).
-Looking for a scanner that does not hog my system resources too much (important).
-Looking for a scanner that can scan my entire computer quickly (but not that important).
-Looking for a scanner that has frequent updates (somewhat important).

If I sound mad, I'm really sorry. I just want to get to the point because my Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition seems a bit weak for getting rid of viruses. I have over two dozen items in Quarantine and nothing is ever seems to be fixed.

Please post your recommendations. Thank you =)

imo, having frequent updates (daily basis) is very important..

i recommend AVG7 pro edition. and yes, pls ditch norton.

in addition to a AV, i wld recommend you install anti-spyware and trojan scanner too. spybot S&D and adaware, if u havent heard of them alredy. and TDS3 the best trojan scanner on earth.

my 2cents.

And if you don't want to pay anything go with AVG 7 Free Edition . It gets updated the same as the Pro version,I'm sure they don't make separate dat files for free versus PRO . Don't know what the difference is , probably a few more bells and whistles as far as scheduling etc ... I have never had a virus problem with AVG . Also if you are getting that many viruses it is time to take a good look at your ISP , 98 percent of your viruses should be picked off up at your ISP's mail server and cleaned up there , if not I would look at another ISP .

I agree with ironman with nod32,but also don`t overlook Kav/kaspersky as one of the best."If you base your facts on personal opinions only",then Norton,nod32,kav,Mcafee,Avg,trend micro would be your most popular, but if you base the best Av by "factual" tests that were performed by virus bulletin, then the winners would be Nod32,and Kaspersky..

I've had so many problems with Norton 2004 that I'm ditching it before my subscriptions even expire.

I've got NOD32 on my main (client) computer, which is worth every penny, and AVG 7.0 (30 day trial) on the Server for now. I've been very satisfied with AVG 7.0 on my non-tecchie dh's tower, which is not networked.

Norton did not find a single problem on ds's machine when he caught a very complicated virus/spyware/trojan combo and the 30 day trial of NOD32 picked up and repaired 6 different Trojans. I like how it updates quietly and daily in the background and does not need restarting and how few system resources it uses.

first and foremost NOD32 is THE BEST av on the market period. thats not my opinion its simple facts....

here are the facts.

http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml

choose your brand and see if it has passed 100% viruse test more than nod32.

but of course use what u want...but this post was for the best av.

i personally dont see why anyone would use kaperspy, my god its fail 13 times. norton 6 times rest are worse.

happy holidays

Thanks for all the replies. I am now using Nod32 and I'm loving it. I want frequent updates, but daily updates is just a bit too much for me because I use 56k pretty frequently and it's a pain to download definitions all the time. It's not like I spend hours on the computer anyway. Thanks again for the help! =)

foxxkat: I scan with Ad-aware and Spybot frequently and I love them. I have never heard of TDS3 before but I will check it out right away. Thanks!
