I have an icon on my desktop i cannot remove.

Specs: Windows XP
The icon is "The Master's Plan..."
I can right click and drag it to the recycle bin ir anywhere else on the desktop.
When I try to delete it it says. "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disc."
I have tried in Safe mode. I also was online with a Norton Tech who took control of my computer but could also not remove it.

See More: I have an icon on my desktop i cannot remove.

... download and run starter

... from the "startups" tab uncheck the program from the list then reboot the pc

... it maybe a case of the progam being "in-use" when windows kicks-in and maybe more than an icon!

... as a precaution install and run (then update) Malwarebytes then scan the pc
.
Demonstrative exspelling
... there is logic to this madness!

ProcMon is your friend in these situations:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...

Start ProcMon running | Filter so only "Image Name" = "explorer.exe" is displayed | Attempt to delete the file | See what is locking the file | Remedy the situation yourself or post your results back here.

just use free software like unlocker, dr delete or move on boot to remove it.
I'll bet Norton techs charged you for the help? Happens alot...with paid AV's

Whilst that's a good idea, it won't help with the root-cause of the issue - What's locking the file? Is it malicious?

Wilyumm, This may be worth a try. Right click your "Desktop", choose "Properties", under the "Desktop" tab click the "Customize Desktop" button, under the "Web" tab make sure that ALL boxes are unchecked, click OK/Apply/OK.

After several days and many suggestions I was finally able to remove the icon by running "Unlocker". It reported it was not locked but could help me anyway. It removed the icon

Thank you XpUser4real.
