Hey ya,
Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, but I'm new here. About 5 days ago I got an e-mail from someone. I noticed the file size was very large, and that I didn't know exactly where the e-mail was from or what it contained. I decided to open it up in a new window, and the page says: "Cannot be displayed." Well, I didn't think nothing of it, right??? Wrong...about 2 min. later, my computer started to "mess up."
I have a hard drive of 14 gigs, with a RAM of 128 on a Pent. 3 processor. It's on a cable line, so it meets my computer needs pretty good. Notice on the tower, one has two flashing light buttons. One is suppose to be on when your computer is on, and one blinks every now and then, esp. when you are opening up a program, etc.Well, since I opened up what I call a "virus" both lights have been going like crazy....my computer (harddrive) sounds like a truck or something! I hit Alt. - Del. - Control to see what programs are running, and there is only explorer and my AIM.
Everyday since the first day I got the "virus," I'm guessing the same person has been sending me another one...he even sent my mom one (on her Hotmail account), using my user name as the subject!!!! I have my e-mail service with Everyone.net, because I run a website, and users can have their free e-mail@mysite.com. Everyone.net has no anti-virus software for their e-mails, so this didn't help any. Last night, on my Hotmail account, again, I'm guessing the same guy e-mailed me again the same "virus."
I say "virus" because I don't have any anti-virus software on this computer, but I have downloaded four anti-virus software kits in the past few days. All say my computer is free of any known viruses or worms.
When I restart, some programs are automactially suppose to start up with windows (I have Windows ME, BTW), but now, I'm lucky if I get the computer to "calm down" before it freezes again, much less worry about programs that aren't working.
My computer is running so slow now, too! The cable line is still great, and I'm getting my regular download and upload speeds. But to open up just WinAmp or something takes like 5 min. where before it wouldn't even take 5 sec. to open!!!!
Again, when the guy sends me the e-mail, I have no clue at all to who it is, because the page always says the error page: "Page Cannot be displayed." I have no clue to who would do this....I don't remember pissing off anyone lately
Do I just need more RAM added to my computer????? Or is this really a stealth virus that no anti-virus software can detect???? Someone told me to just format my harddrive, and I have thought about it....but I really don't want too unless I have too, ya know?
If it is a virus, then whoever did it is good. He knows my website e-mail (but most everyone knows that) and my hotmail account e-mail (almost no one knows about that). He seems to know my mom's e-mail too, and that we are related as mother and son. In fact, I just won an auction on eBay.com, and the seller, a company called JLCElectronics (their e-mail is username@aol.com), sold me some tweeters. I won the auction (my username on eBay has no words, or key words to hint who I am), and right after I got an e-mail from the seller giving me his PayPal link. I paid him, he left me postive feedback, and now I'm waiting for the tweeters to come in. The thing is, is that one of the e-mails with the "virus" was from him!!! Or can just anyone make up an e-mail thru AOL, even though someone already has it????!!!!
I have no clue on what to do....I'm running yet another anti-virus search on my harddrive....so far, no viruses or worms found. What do I do here? How should I turn this guy over to AOL, Hotmail.com, Everyone.net, etc.? What should I do with my computer? Just install more RAM and hopefully that is the problem?
Any help would be very grateful. Thanks for listening to my story! Please help!
Thanks again,
Coondog

Run an online virus scan at either Panda or House Call to make sure you are virus free if you haven't already done so

How large was the file size? What was
the name of the file? The limit on
attachments are usually about 1 MB. If it
was pretty big, than it just very well might
be a virus

Most of the viruses that are out there are
pretty small. Usually they are measured
in bytes because they don't have the size
to be measured in megabytes.I am just saying that this could be a virus
because it looks like something that
could have the possible potential.

Sounds like you got Nimda, its not the guy emailing it to your mother, its your computer emailing it to her.

If it is a virus, then you have to get rid of it. Short of a name, it's hard to identify how to get rid of it. If you bought something like Norton, maybe send it in for analysis. Otherwise, it's a long process, figuring this out. Too bad they say you are clean, as you may be, but that sounds very much like a virus of some sort. I'd keep scanning for virus, try AVG at www.grisoft.com
And housecall and Panda also.
If you have no luck then you may just have to consider reinstalling Windows, but not just yet, give it more effort and see what comes up.
I'd go ahead (if you can) stat backing up your PC files now, however you have to be certain that you do not transfer the "virus" to a new OS load.
