Hi everyone!
Well, today I removed CWShredder from my comp and reinstalled the updated one 2x and it is still telling me that I have a variant of "smartsearch" on my comp. I did all kinds of scans and not one of the other programs I have picked up a thing.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but did someone on here mention that the CWShredder problem was fixed?
Maybe I am doing something wrong? I've had CWShredder for several months now, and I didn't do anything differently than I did in the past.
Is anyone else still getting the warning? I can't be the only one still getting a false positive.
Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks...

Not sure about CWShredder I usually use Adaware then make sure by going through the manual removal when I work on others PC's.

http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/library/smartsearch/index.phtml+

This link should help track down everything for manual removal.

I didn't say it was fixed, what I said was it didn't give me the error after the latest update. This was when the problem was occuring.

Were you infected with cool web search? It is pretty obvious if you are.

Seems like a lot of people without the cool web search hijacker are running shredder and running into issues.

Just curious, what is the version number of your update? Next time you run it remember the number at the bottom of the main screen. You may not have the absolute latest version. If it is still doing so after the very latest version, then I don't know what to say.

dw226,

I have version 1.47.0. I went to the merijn site and got it right from there today.

I just updated it again, and it told me that I had the variant smartsearch.2. I dunno (insert sigh here).

Dog,
Like I said...correct me if I am wrong, and I was. I apologize.

efabes,
No, not to my knowledge, no infection. Everything is running smoothly, but just wondering what's going on, that's all.

Thanks for the replies.

dw226,
Please let me know if that is the latest version...I would think it was. I could be wrong on that too.

That's the latest version I know of. I don't know, maybe it's only doing this for certain people now. Believe me, we had a time with that for the last few updates, it drove us nuts.

I have version 1.47 of CWShredder. When I last started it, it said it was starting with a string of random characters in its title bar (or somesuch) because I had a variant of something ... but it was not infected. Further it said run it again if I wish to verify that it was ok. It seems ok but what's going on?

I'm not sure what exactly happened, but it happened to everybody for the last couple of updates, and it seemed to have been fixed for the last one, though obviously this isn't true.

afbyorb,
Yes, that is exactly what it does for me too with the string of random characters. It says that I have the smartsearch.2 variant. That's probably what it is telling you too.
I also noticed when I run the "fix" it gets hung up on the smartsearch variant a little longer than all the rest. It cruises through the rest until it gets to that one.
Maybe we will wake up tomorrow (rather today), and find that it stopped doing this to us. ;)

Good advice from Tom41 - merijn (CWShredder) advises the running of it before running CWShredder.

Viv, seems that for some people the problem disappeared and for others it didn't. Buggered if I know what's going on. 'Tis a strange world we live in.....
